Odisha Congress on Wednesday declared a series of demonstrations it will organise in different districts to condemn the surge in crimes against women in the state.

The 'Nari Naya Yatra' will be launched on August 8 and will last till August 14, said state Congress president Bhakta Charan Das.

Members of Congress will gherao the office of DGP in Cuttack at 10 am on August 8, seeking the arrest of the three individuals who allegedly burnt a girl in Puri's Balanga, he added.

“We had issued a seven-day ultimatum to the police to arrest the culprits,” said Das.

The Congress will hold a 'yatra' at Balanga village of the girl on August 10. The procession will begin from the village of the girl and proceed to Nimapada town, where a public meeting will be conducted.

Das appealed to women, students and youth to participate in the programme in large numbers.

The family of the girl had previously accused three miscreants of setting her ablaze on July 19. After her death on August 2, police said that no other people was involved in her killing.

Subsequently, a video statement was also released by her father, agreeing with the police, asserting that she took her own life out of emotional turmoil.

Das announced that an identical march will also be taken out in Balasore on August 14, seeking justice for the student who reportedly self-immolated herself after inaction on her sexual harassment allegation against a professor.

The march will begin near Fakir Mohan (Autonomous) College, he added.

The student, aged 20 years, succumbed to injuries during treatment at AIIMS-Bhubaneswar on July 14.

In the meantime, the Biju Janata Dal will also observe a six-hour strike in Puri district on August 7, protesting the killing of the girl due to burn injuries. The strike will be from 6 am to 12 pm, BJD spokesperson Lenin Mohanty said.
