Odisha college student who immolated herself after alleged sexual harassment by a professor succumbed to her injuries at AIIMS here, the hospital confirmed. The Integrated B.Ed second-year student of Fakir Mohan (Autonomous) College, Balasore, succumbed to her injuries on Monday night, following a battle for life for three days.
She immolated herself on Saturday due to alleged inaction against the professor and had sustained 95 per cent burns.
Lamenting the death of the student, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi assured that all the perpetrators in the case would be given the harshest punishment by law.
The woman was initially admitted to the Balasore district hospital before being transferred to AIIMS Bhubaneswar for further treatment. She was receiving treatment in the ICU, Department of Burn Centre, officials said.

"The patient was resuscitated with IV fluids, IV antibiotics, intubated and placed on mechanical ventilation. In spite of proper resuscitation and all supportive measures available, including renal replacement therapy in the Burns ICU, she could not be revived and was pronounced clinically dead at 11:46 pm on July 14," the Department of Burn Centre stated in its release.
Taking to X, Chief Minister Majhi posted, "I am saddened to learn about the sad news of the death of the female student of Fakir Mohan Autonomous College. Despite all the responsibilities being fulfilled by the government and the concerted efforts of the professional medical team, the life of the victim could not be salvaged." "I offer my eternal peace to her soul departed and request Lord Jagannath to bless her family with strength to endure this irreparable loss."
"I assure the family of the dead student that all the culprits in this case will be given the harshest punishment according to the law. I have requested the authorities to give the issue top priority. The government is with the grieving family," he said.
President Droupadi Murmu, who was in AIIMS Bhubaneswar to attend its 5th convocation ceremony, visited the hospital on Monday evening and enquired about the health of the student.
Fakir Mohan (Autonomous) College Principal Dilip Ghose and Education Department HoD Samira Kumar Sahu have been arrested in this case.
