Omar Abdullah orders high alert as flood warning issued in Samba

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has put all the concerned departments on high alert amid incessant rainfall and heavy rainfall in the UT.


The rainfall has wreaked havoc across several places in the mountainous districts like Rajouri, Kathua, Kishtwar, and Samba, while a few districts across the Kashmir valley have also been put on high alert. He advised people to remain vigilant amid a weather forecast predicting moderate to heavy rainfall across the area, with the possibility of cloudbursts, flash floods and landslides in the high-altitude areas till August 27.


The Office of Omar Abdullah’s latest post on X read, “The chief minister said Abdullah has directed all departments to remain on high alert, as heavy rains have caused waterlogging in several residential areas, with rivers and nallahs flowing above the danger mark.”


“Control rooms are active, and the CM Office is in touch with departments. Priority is being given to drainage in affected areas and restoration of essential services like water supply and power. People are advised to remain cautious,” the chief minister said.

Heavy rains lashed most of Jammu and Kashmir overnight with strong winds, triggering a flood-like situation in several important commercial and residential low-lying areas.


Meanwhile, authorities sounded a flood alert in the Samba district after the Basantar Nallah crossed the evacuation mark on early Sunday morning. Residents are advised to keep vigil on the developments and follow the advisories issued by the MeT and concerned offices.
