Amid escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, the J&K government and Mamta Banerjee led West Bengal government have cancelled leaves of all cadres of government employees, besides cancellation of all holidays.
J&K Government has directed its Administrative Secretaries and Heads of Departments not to sanction any kind of leave in favour
of any employee, except under exceptional circumstances.
The government has officially canceled all leaves granted to government employees, including those already on leave. The move aims to ensure that every department is fully staffed and ready to respond if the situation worsens.Officials have also been told not to approve any new leave applications until further instructions are given.
“Also conveyed the Head of the department not sanction any further leave till further order,” a senior official confirmed.This decision applies to all state-level departments, including health, administration, police, education, and public services.
In another major development, the University of Jammu and the University of Kashmir have postponed all scheduled examinations due to the ongoing border situation. The announcement has been made to ensure the safety of students, faculty, and staff, many of whom live near or travel through high-risk zones.
“University of Jammu and University of Kashmir postponed all it’s examinations amid ongoing border tensions,” university officials said.New dates for the exams will be announced once the situation returns to normal.
To help manage the situation better and assist the public, the Divisional Commissioner of Kashmir has issued a list of contact numbers for district-level control rooms across the Kashmir Valley. These control rooms will serve as help centers for emergency communication, coordination, and public support.
On alert mode for the state, CM Mamta Banerjee took similar measures. On Wednesday, Union Home minister Amit Shah convened an emergency meeting with the chief ministers of India’s border states. Mamata was among those present in the meeting. Following this meeting, she held a high-level review session with senior officials and heads of various departments at Nabanna, the state secretariat.
Sources at Nabanna clarified that while routine leaves are canceled, emergency leave requests may still be considered based on necessity.
Mock drills were conducted across several districts of the state on Wednesday, where administrative and law enforcement personnel received tactical training on responding to possible wartime scenarios. According to officials, such drills will be intensified and repeated across the state until the situation along the border stabilises.
Mamata also urged the public not to panic, assuring that the state government is closely monitoring developments. “If any situation arises or we receive prior information, we will promptly inform the public,” she added.
District magistrates and superintendents of police also received fresh directives to bolster security arrangements in their respective areas.
