Heavy rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds over two days have caused widespread damage across Tripura, leaving one person dead, two injured and more than 4,000 houses affected, with hundreds of villagers moved to relief camps as restoration efforts continue.

The deceased, Bajanti Reang from West Kathalcherra in Dhalai district, was killed after being struck by lightning on April 27. Her family has been given interim assistance of Rs 20,000.

According to the State Emergency Operation Centre, a total of 4,191 houses have been damaged across the state, including 195 fully destroyed, 547 severely damaged and 3,449 partially affected. Financial assistance amounting to Rs 66.445 lakh has been disbursed to 1,243 affected families so far.

Though rainfall eased on Tuesday morning, the aftermath continues to disrupt normal life. Power supply remains affected in several areas, including parts of Agartala, where outages have stretched up to 40 hours, triggering protests by residents.

Relief and restoration operations have intensified, with the administration dispatching aid and monitoring the situation closely. Two relief camps are currently sheltering 791 people displaced by the storms.

The severe weather has also caused extensive damage to public infrastructure. At least 129 electric poles were uprooted, while 659 school buildings were affected, including 69 that were completely damaged.

District-wise assessments indicate widespread losses. In North Tripura, Dharmanagar subdivision reported 136 damaged houses, while Panisagar and Kanchanpur also recorded significant impact. In Unakoti district, Kailashahar subdivision alone reported 518 damaged houses, with compensation already distributed in several cases.

Sepahijala district emerged as one of the worst affected, with Bishalgarh reporting 947 damaged houses, followed by Sonamura with 387 and Jampuijala with 153. Relief camps have been set up in these areas to accommodate displaced residents.

Damage was also reported from Dhalai, West Tripura, Khowai, Gomati and South Tripura districts, including road blockages due to uprooted trees and disruptions to power infrastructure.

Despite the widespread destruction, river levels remain below danger marks. Authorities continue to monitor major rivers, including the Howrah, Gomati, Muhuri and Manu, amid concerns over further rainfall.
