A man hailing from Fatehpur, Uttar Pradesh, has been charged with murdering his mother to claim her life insurance payout, purportedly to settle his staggering debt accrued from online gaming addiction.
According to police reports, the accused, identified as Himanshu, succumbed to the grip of addiction on the popular gaming platform Zupee, where successive losses resulted in a mounting debt of nearly ₹4 lakh.
Desperate for a solution, Himanshu devised a gruesome plan to eliminate his mother, Prabha, and capitalize on the insurance policies he purchased for his parents.
The alleged perpetrator purportedly stole his paternal aunt's jewelry to fund the acquisition of life insurance policies valued at ₹50 lakh each for his parents. Subsequently, when the opportunity arose, Himanshu reportedly choked his mother to death in the absence of his father, Roshan Singh, and disposed of her body near the banks of the Yamuna river.
Upon his return from a temple visit, Roshan Singh discovered the absence of his wife and son. After inquiries yielded no results, he was directed to the Yamuna river bank by a neighbor who had spotted Himanshu in the vicinity with a tractor.
Authorities were alerted, and Prabha's body was recovered from the Yamuna riverbank.
Himanshu was swiftly apprehended, with subsequent interrogation revealing the disturbing details of his alleged scheme to eliminate his mother.
Senior police officer Vijay Shankar Mishra remarked on the heinous nature of the crime, emphasising that the son's evasion was short-lived as law enforcement authorities swiftly uncovered the sinister plot.
The proliferation of cheap and accessible internet connectivity has fueled a surge in online gaming, with platforms like Zupee offering avenues for users to earn money.
