The search operation in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri has entered its 14th day, with police and security forces continuing anti-militancy operations in forest areas. The joint operation, launched by the Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), is underway in the Gambhir Mughlan and Dorimal areas of the Manjakote sector in Rajouri district.
According to officials, security forces continue to track suspected terrorists hiding in the forest areas of the Rajouri district. Besides tracking the terrorists through dense forests, natural caves, and treacherous terrain, security forces have initiated ID verification process at key locations to prevent them from escaping.
The operation, codenamed Operation Sheruwali, was launched following intelligence inputs indicating the presence of suspected terrorists in the region. Officials said the move was aimed at trapping the suspects within designated zones while search teams intensify operations on the ground.
Security forces last established contact with the terrorists in Rajouri at around 11:30 am on May 23, 2026, during a joint operation in the Gambhir Mughlan area under Operation Sheruwali.
Although insurgency-related incidents have come down drastically in the Kashmir Valley over the past four to five years, counter-insurgency operations continue across the Jammu division as the focus of terrorist activity has shifted to the Jammu region.
Security and intelligence agencies credit the decline in militancy largely to strengthened security measures and tighter control in the region. However, some security experts believe that while militancy has come down, it has neither disappeared nor gone completely underground in the Valley.
Meanwhile, the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir has improved considerably from a security perspective. However, rising drug abuse and narco-terrorism have emerged as significant challenges, posing new security challenges for security forces operating in the region.
