Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on Wednesday, presenting data on the recovery of 237 firearms in just two months to highlight the worsening law and order situation in West Bengal.
Adhikari urged the Centre to intervene to ensure free and fair Assembly elections in 2026. He also accused ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) activists of using violence and intimidation. “I showed him recent cases where TMC-backed goons were seen carrying guns in public,” he said.
The BJP leader from East Midnapore warned that if no action was taken, the TMC would create chaos and bloodshed during the next elections.

Recently, a TMC leader was chased and shot dead in broad daylight in north Bengal’s Malta town. Police arrested five suspects, including another TMC leader and four hired hitmen. A few days later, an accused in a murder case shot at two policemen while being taken to jail but was later killed in a police encounter.
The police claim they have intensified their crackdown on illegal arms. “In a 48-hour operation in November, we recovered 69 firearms, arrested 83 people in south Bengal, and shut down 12 illegal gun factories run by experts from Bihar’s Munger,” an officer said.
Adhikari, however, dismissed these efforts as superficial. “The number of seized weapons is nothing compared to those already in the hands of TMC workers. Many of these weapons are being used in their internal conflicts. The Centre must step in and deploy its agencies to disarm the ruling party’s goons,” he said.
During the meeting, Adhikari also raised concerns about violence against Hindu minorities in Bangladesh. “Shahji assured me that the Centre is taking necessary steps to address the issue,” he added.
