The India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for parts of Jharkhand, warning of hailstorms, lightning, and strong winds expected to hit the state on Thursday.
According to Abhishek Anand, Deputy Director of the Ranchi Meteorological Centre, several areas, particularly in the eastern region, are likely to experience hail accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds reaching speeds of up to 50 kilometers per hour. Western and adjoining central regions of Jharkhand may also witness thunderstorms and gusty conditions.
The orange alert, which falls under the “be prepared” category in IMD’s colour-coded weather warning system, has been issued for three major regions of the state. In addition to the storm warnings, the Met department has also forecast light to moderate rainfall across various pockets of Jharkhand.
This rainfall is expected to bring some relief from the heat, with maximum daytime temperatures likely to drop by two to three degrees Celsius in affected areas.

Explaining the sudden change in weather, Anand attributed it to a significant moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal, driven by a well-marked low-pressure system and an associated trough positioned over Jharkhand. These meteorological factors are contributing to the increased likelihood of thunderstorms and rain.
Temperature data from Wednesday shows that the heat continues to grip many parts of the state. Daltonganj recorded the highest temperature at 40.3 degrees Celsius, while Garhwa followed closely at 38.4 degrees. In the state capital Ranchi, the maximum temperature was measured at 35.2 degrees Celsius.
The approaching weather system is expected to bring temporary relief from these soaring temperatures, while also posing risks associated with severe thunderstorms and hail.
