A National Lok Adalat held at the local courts this Saturday saw the resolution of over 100,000 cases, ranging from financial disputes to complex matrimonial matters. The proceedings were overseen by Justice Kirti Singh of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, who was welcomed to the city courts for the first time by a delegation including District and Sessions Judge Harpreet Kaur Randhawa and Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Jain.

One of the more poignant successes of the day occurred in the family court, where a bench led by Additional Principal Judge Justice Harpreet Kaur helped a young couple reconcile. Having married in February 2024, the pair had been living apart since September after a falling out. Despite two previous attempts to settle the matter through village panchayats, the husband had eventually turned to the legal system in October. However, during the Lok Adalat, both parties had a change of heart and expressed a genuine desire to give their marriage another go.

For those couples who felt their differences were simply irreconcilable, the benches took a pragmatic approach. Rather than letting them languish in the court system for many years, judges encouraged them to part ways on amicable terms. This focus on mediation proved highly effective; by the end of the day, a staggering 104,805 cases had been settled, with awards totalling approximately ₹86,60,76,724 being passed.

Another successful session was held by the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, where 28 out of 36 cases were resolved under the guidance of its president, Sanjeev Batra. Justice Amandeep, the chief judicial magistrate, said that 53 separate benches were constituted to deal with the sheer volume of cases, again demonstrating the enthusiasm of the public to avoid traditional litigation in favor of a more streamlined process.
