Over 200 individuals from the Meitei community in Manipur's Jiribam district have been relocated to a newly established relief camp following violent incidents triggered by the alleged killing of a man by militants.
The affected villagers, hailing from areas like Lamtai Khunou, Dibong Khunou, Nunkhal, and Begra, had their houses torched by suspected militants, prompting the evacuation to Jiri Sports Complex.
Most of those displaced lived in villages over 30 km from Jiribam town, and additional security personnel have been deployed to the area, officials stated.
Manipur police have directed state commando personnel from Imphal Valley to report to duty in Jiribam immediately.
Tension escalated in Manipur's Jiribam district after a 59-year-old man was allegedly killed by militants, sparking ethnic unrest.
The victim, Soibam Saratkumar Singh, was found dead with injuries from a sharp object after going missing from his farm, police confirmed.
Following the incident, locals retaliated by setting fire to an abandoned structure, while demanding the return of licensed firearms taken during elections.
Jiribam, with a diverse ethnic mix including Meiteis, Muslims, Nagas, Kukis, and others, was previously unaffected by the ongoing ethnic conflict in Manipur.
The conflict between Imphal Valley's Meiteis and hill-based Kukis has claimed over 200 lives and displaced thousands since May last year.
