Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday confirmed that top Lashkar-e-Taiba commander Suleman, along with his two associates, was killed in an encounter in Srinagar on Monday.
Shah said that all three terrorists were involved in the Pahalgam attack and they were designated as A-Category terrorists operating in the Kashmir Valley.
He said, “… In Operation Mahadev, Suleman, alias Faizal, Afghan, and Jibran, these three terrorists, were killed in a joint operation of the Indian Army, CRPF and J&K Police. Suleman was A-category commander of the Lashkar-e-Taiba.”
He further added that voter IDs and chocolate wrappers recovered from the slain terrorists were manufactured in Pakistan, and that the Centre has concrete evidence confirming their origin. Shah was responding to Congress leader P Chidambaram's question about where the terrorists killed in the recent Operation Sindoor in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam had come from.
“Afghan and Jibran, both top-ranked terrorists who were involved in the Pahalgam attack, were killed by the security forces in the encounter in the Mahadev area of Srinagar on Monday,” he said.
He also noted that individuals who were supplying food and logistical support to the terrorists had already been detained by our agencies earlier, and later identified the bodies once they were brought to Srinagar.
The joint operation was launched based on specific intelligence inputs regarding the presence of terrorists in the area. The search operation quickly escalated into a fierce encounter after the hiding militants opened fire on the security forces. The exchange lasted for several hours before all three were neutralised.
Expressing condolences to the families of the Pahalgam victims, Shah said, “Innocent civilians were killed in front of their families after being asked about their religion. I strongly condemn this barbaric act and extend my heartfelt sympathies to the families who lost their loved ones.”
