A panchayat poll candidate who received the victory certificate from the election officer has informed the authorities that she actually got fewer votes than her opponent and that he should be declared the rightful winner.

The incident took place after the results for the Tarkuli gram panchayat head post were announced. Tarkuli falls under Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami’s assembly constituency, Champawat.

Kajal Bisht was officially declared the winner with 103 votes. However, her rival, Sumit Kumar, had received 106 votes, three more than her.

"I told the election officer that I did not win the election, I lost. My opponent got three more votes than me, so the certificate should be given to the rightful winner," Bisht said.

When no action was taken by the election officer, Kajal filed a case with the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Anurag Arya.

The SDM accepted her objection and has ordered the election officer to recount the votes within 30 days. Officials said the date for the recount is expected to be announced soon.
