Panic buying of petrol and diesel gripped the state capital on Friday, with long queues of vehicles seen outside fuel stations across the city despite repeated assurances from the administration and oil companies that there is no shortage of fuel.
From as early as 6 am, motorists began lining up at petrol pumps in different parts of Ranchi. Apart from cars, bikes and scooters, several people were also seen carrying gallons and bottles to stock fuel amid rumours of a possible shortage.
Since Thursday evening, long queues have been reported at several fuel outlets, causing traffic congestion in many areas.
The rush intensified after reports surfaced that some petrol pumps had run dry and temporarily shut operations. Fuel stations in areas such as Namkum and Pithoria witnessed heavy crowds, further fuelling concerns among residents.
However, the Ranchi district administration clarified that the supply of petrol and diesel remains normal across the district and dismissed rumours of any disruption.
Following directions from Deputy Commissioner Manjunath Bhajantri, a review meeting was held by Sub-Divisional Officer Kumar Rajat with representatives of various oil companies.
During the meeting, oil companies assured officials that adequate stock of petrol and diesel is available and the supply chain is functioning smoothly. The administration directed companies to resolve any transportation or logistical issues immediately to ensure uninterrupted supply.
Officials also appealed to citizens not to believe unverified rumours and urged people to purchase fuel only according to their actual needs, warning that panic buying could create unnecessary pressure on supply systems.
