Congress leader Sachin Pilot has accused the AAP-led Delhi government and the BJP-led Central government of prioritising their rivalry over the welfare of Delhi’s citizens.
Speaking ahead of the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections, he asserted that Congress stands as the “better option” for voters.
“There is a battle of supremacy between the Delhi government and the central government, and the people of the city are suffering in this,” Pilot remarked during a press briefing in Udaipur on Monday.
Congress’ five guarantees
Emphasising Congress’ vision for Delhi, Pilot highlighted five key promises aimed at addressing public needs. These include:
- LPG cylinders at ₹500.
- Free ration kits and electricity up to 300 units.
- A ₹2,500 monthly grant for women under the ‘Pyaari Didi Yojana.’
- Free health insurance cover of up to ₹25 lakh under the ‘Jeevan Raksha Yojana.’
- ₹8,500 monthly financial aid for educated unemployed youth for one year.
Pilot also reminded voters of the development under the Sheila Dikshit-led Congress government, which ruled Delhi for 15 years.
“We have given some guarantees to the people of Delhi. They also remember the development that took place under the Sheila Dikshit-led Congress government. We will fight strongly, and the Congress will do well in the Delhi polls,” he said.
Commenting on the opposition INDIA bloc, Pilot credited Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and senior leader Rahul Gandhi for uniting parties against the BJP-led NDA.
“The result was good,” he said, referring to the bloc’s collective efforts during the Lok Sabha elections.
AAP's dominance, Congress' challenge
The 70-member Delhi Assembly is slated for elections on 5 February, with results expected on 8 February.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has been the dominant force, winning 67 seats in 2015 and 62 in 2020, while the Congress has failed to secure a single seat in the last two elections.
The BJP secured three and eight seats in 2015 and 2020, respectively.
Pilot expressed optimism that the tide will turn this time, stating that the people will vote for Congress as they consider it the more reliable choice.
