Survey teams from Assam and Meghalaya install boundary pillars at Rongthali village in Hahim on Tuesday.

Survey teams from Assam and Meghalaya, backed by senior government officials, resumed installation of boundary pillars in Assam’s Kamrup district on Tuesday to further the long-delayed interstate border resolution.

The exercise began at Rongthali village in Hahim and is set to cover multiple locations along the Gijang River, moving through strategic points including Umchek, Mashpara, Ranighar and Athiyabari-Rangchapara via Thutiyabazar near Hahim market. The initiative follows sustained political dialogue and field-level coordination between the two Northeastern states.

Boundary markers are being installed in sectors previously demarcated under the agreement signed by the two states on March 29, 2022. These include Hahim, Gijang, Tarabari, Boklapara, Khanapara-Pilingkata, and Batachera, six of the twelve sectors under dispute. Officials said further pillar placement will be taken up shortly in the adjacent Gijang region.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma have led the peace efforts, holding multiple rounds of dialogue to resolve territorial disputes rooted in colonial-era maps and competing administrative claims. The most recent meeting between the two leaders on June 2 reaffirmed their commitment to visible progress ahead of India’s Independence Day.

The resolution process, initially met with local apprehensions, now finds acceptance among border residents. Communities in Hahim described the development as “historic”, expressing hope that it would usher in a permanent end to years of friction and overlapping governance.

Officials said the survey teams are coordinating closely with local police, administrative units, and tribal councils to prevent any fresh flare-ups during the installation phase.

The border demarcation, decades in the making, is seen as a significant step toward restoring peace and clarity in one of the most sensitive and long-contested regions in the Northeast.
