Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the Mukhwa temple in Uttarkashi district on Thursday to offer prayers. The temple is the winter home of Goddess Ganga.
Mukhwa is located on the route to the Gangotri temple, which is dedicated to Goddess Ganga. Every year, after Gangotri Dham closes for winter, the idol of Goddess Ganga is moved to Mukhwa temple.
During his visit, PM Modi will also flag off a trek and bike rally and address a public gathering in Harshil. This is his first visit to the Mukhwa temple as prime minister, and it is expected to boost winter tourism and pilgrimage in Uttarakhand.
His visit comes a day after he approved two major ropeway projects worth over Rs 6,000 crore for Kedarnath and Hemkund Sahib.
The Uttarakhand government has launched a Winter Tourism programme to promote religious tourism, support local businesses, and encourage homestays.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami welcomed PM Modi in a post on X, calling Uttarakhand a land of spirituality and sacrifice. He said the people of Mukhwa and Harshil were excited to receive the prime minister and hoped his visit would help put Mukhwa on the global tourism map.
