Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated the new terminal building at Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati and later held a roadshow, greeting thousands of people along the route. Following the public engagement, Modi interacted with state BJP leaders at the party headquarters in Basistha, discussing preparations for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections and strategies to strengthen the party’s organisational base.
During his nearly one-hour visit to Vaypayee Bhawan, Modi sought detailed feedback from the state leadership on public perception of the government and how election preparations were progressing. Veteran party leader Narayan Borkotoky said, “There was no formality involved. He was just like a party member interacting with another member… He spoke in detail on how to prepare for the elections.” Modi also enquired about the well-being of senior leaders and how the party machinery was functioning, sitting among them rather than on a dais.
Addressing the public after the airport inauguration, Modi criticised the Congress party, alleging that it had neglected Assam and the Northeast for decades. He claimed that before Independence, Congress had been part of a conspiracy to merge Assam with undivided Bengal or East Pakistan, which was opposed by freedom fighter Gopinath Bordoloi, who later became Assam’s first Chief Minister. “Bordoloi ji stood against his own party and safeguarded Assam’s identity,” Modi said, adding that Congress had committed “a sin of trying to destroy the identity of Assam.”

The Prime Minister also highlighted the significance of modern airport facilities, describing them as instruments of development that open up new opportunities and build confidence among citizens. “Today is a day of celebration of development, not just for Assam, but for the entire Northeast. The whole country will see Assam celebrating the festival of development,” he said. Modi added that his personal attachment to the state and the affection of its people, particularly mothers and sisters, continuously inspire him to work for the region’s growth.
Assam is scheduled to go to the polls in the first half of next year, with the BJP seeking a third consecutive term in the state. Modi’s visit comes amid a series of development initiatives aimed at reinforcing the party’s narrative of progress and public welfare in the region.
