Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced financial compensation for the victims of the devastating fire that broke out at a hotel in Barabazar, Kolkata, killing 15 people—including two children, a woman, and 12 men.
According to an official statement, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has declared that the families of the deceased will receive ₹2 lakh each from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF). Additionally, ₹50,000 will be provided to each of the injured individuals to aid in their treatment.
Fire brigade authorities stated that the blaze engulfed the six-storey building late on Tuesday night, leaving several residents trapped inside. “Though at least 25 people were rescued by fire brigade personnel and local residents, the delay in controlling the blaze is being seen as a factor contributing to the high death toll. Some of the injured have been admitted to Kolkata Medical College, NRS Medical College and R.G. Kar Hospital, where they remain in critical condition,” said an official from the fire brigade.
The compensation announcement comes amid rising concerns and criticism over the fire safety measures at the hotel. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to ascertain the cause of the fire and examine any lapses in safety protocols.
Kolkata’s Mayor Firhad Hakim has stated that all aspects, including the presence of fire extinguishing systems at the hotel, will be thoroughly investigated. Meanwhile, the Kolkata Police have launched a search operation for the absconding hotel owner.
The tragedy has sparked political controversy as well, with opposition leaders accusing the state administration of negligence. For now, however, the primary focus remains on relief efforts for the affected families.
