Police alone can't stop rapes, says Madhya Pradesh top cop

At a divisional review meeting in Ujjain, the Madhya Pradesh Director General of Police said that individuals have unregulated access to obscene content now.

Madhya Pradesh Director General of Police Kailash Makwana.

Kailash Makwana, Madhya Pradesh's senior police officer, has attributed the growing number of rape cases to the usage of internet, cell phones, alcohol, and falling morals. He, further, added that "police alone cannot stop rapes". At a divisional review meeting in Ujjain, the Madhya Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP) stated that individuals have unregulated access to obscene content these days, which has exacerbated the issue. He said this while stating the reason for the increase in cases

"There are numerous reasons. To my understanding, it's because of the internet, mobile phones, accessibility to obscene material, alcohol, and how individuals can access each other from anywhere at any time via mobile phones. There is a weakening of moral values in society. These are all contributing factors," he said.

He asserted that the impressionable minds getting misguided by readily available obscene material on the net is one of the basic reasons why rape cases are on the rise. "The type of obscenity being served through the internet is deviating impressionable young minds from a very early age, and this, without any doubt, is one of the causes of the increase in such incidents," he informed mediapersons.

He also mentioned a step-by-step decrease in moral values, even in families, citing the fact that those days of children obeying their parents and teachers are now over. "We’re seeing that even within homes, people aren’t keeping watch over each other. Earlier, children used to listen to their teachers and parents. There was a sense of shame or respect, but many of those boundaries have now disappeared," he added.
