The Assam Police have apprehended an interstate gang from Uttar Pradesh for stealing mobile tower equipment across the state.
Three members of the gang, identified as Shakir Khan, Nabed, and Mainur Ali, were arrested in the Baitamari area of Bongaigaon district while attempting to steal a Radio Remote Unit (RRU) from a mobile tower in Nisha Kayethpara.
The gang had been targeting mobile towers for their valuable equipment, such as batteries and RRUs. Police have also seized a vehicle (registration number AS 01BM 6454), which was used for transporting the stolen items.
Investigations have revealed that the gang had previously stolen two RRUs from mobile towers in the same area.
In a related incident earlier this month, locals in Aohata, Baksa district, foiled an attempt to steal equipment from a mobile tower. Two suspects, Mofidul Islam and Asadul Ali, were caught by an angry mob as they descended from the tower. The individuals were later handed over to the police.
A thorough investigation is currently underway into the activities of the gang, and authorities have assured further action.
