Police in Jharkhand’s West Singhbhum district have destroyed illegal poppy cultivation across more than 150 acres of land, according to Superintendent of Police (SP) Ashutosh Shekhar.
The operations targeted various areas:
- 91 acres under the Bandgaon police station.
- 40.6 acres under the Tebo police station.
- 14 acres under the Toklo police station.
- 5.2 acres under the Karaikela police station.
In addition to cracking down on illegal poppy farming, the district made significant progress in anti-Maoist operations in 2024.
Between January 1 and December 31:
- 7 Maoists were killed.
- 35 Maoists were arrested, and 15 surrendered.
- 131 improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and 210 kg of explosives were seized.
- 32 firearms, 1,624 live cartridges, and ₹12.83 lakh in cash were recovered from Maoists.
The SP added that 32 IEDs planted by Maoists in forests to target security personnel were detected and safely defused. Additionally, 55 gelatin sticks were seized during these operations.
The efforts reflect a continued push by security forces to combat illegal activities and Maoist operations in the region.
