Tipra Motha supremo Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma (L) has announced a Rs 10 lakh reward for information leading to the arrest of the prime accused in the Anjel Chakma (R) murder case.

Tipra Motha supremo Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma on Monday announced a reward of Rs 10 lakh for information leading to the arrest of the prime accused in the murder of Tripura student Anjel Chakma, who was killed in Dehradun earlier this month after protesting against a racial slur.

The 24-year-old MBA student from Nandannagar in West Tripura district was allegedly attacked by a group of six people on December 9. He sustained critical injuries and died on December 26, triggering widespread outrage in Tripura.

Police have arrested five of the six accused so far, while the alleged mastermind remains absconding.

Debbarma made the announcement through a video message, expressing strong displeasure over the Uttarakhand government’s decision to announce a reward of Rs 25,000 for information leading to the arrest of the prime accused.

“I heard that the Uttarakhand government has declared Rs 25,000 on information leading to the arrest of the mastermind in the Anjel Chakma murder case. Is this the price for arresting the mastermind in the killing of Anjel Chakma, a final year student of MBA? I declare Rs 10 lakh to one who provides clues leading to the arrest of the person who had murdered Anjel Chakma. The amount will be paid from my own pocket. Don’t make fun of us,” Debbarma said.

Separately, the Tipra Motha Party-run Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council announced financial assistance of Rs 3 lakh to the bereaved family.

“As recommended by Bubagra (king) Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma, chairman, ADC Administrative Reforms Committee (AARC), has decided to grant a financial compensation of Rs 3 lakh to the family of late Anjel Chakma to support his final rites,” TTAADC Chief Executive Member Purna Chandra Jamatia said in a Facebook post.

Describing the move as a gesture of solidarity, Jamatia added that it reflected “solidarity, compassion, and a sense of collective responsibility during this moment of profound grief”.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved family,” he said.
