President of India, Droupadi Murmu, addressed the 45th convocation ceremony of the Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad, Jharkhand, on Friday, delivering an inspiring message to the graduating students and emphasising the transformative power of education, innovation, and compassion.
Commending IIT-ISM’s near-century-old legacy, President Murmu praised the institution for evolving from a mining and geology school into a premier hub for higher education and multidisciplinary research.
She said the institute now plays a key role in national technological development by aligning educational goals with societal needs and aspirations.
Addressing over 1,800 graduating students, she urged them to extend their contributions beyond personal success and channel their knowledge toward building a just, inclusive, and sustainable India.
“Do not limit your education to personal advancement,” she told them. “Use it as a force for public good. Build an India where development goes hand-in-hand with environmental protection, and where growth benefits all sections of society.”

Highlighting the global challenges of climate change, digital disruption, resource scarcity, and inequality, the President called on IIT-ISM to take the lead in providing innovative and sustainable solutions.
She said institutions like IIT-ISM must not only produce excellent engineers and researchers but also nurture professionals with purpose, compassion, and sensitivity.
She stressed that India’s demographic strength, backed by increased access to technical education and digital literacy, is driving the nation toward becoming a global technology leader. However, for this momentum to continue, the education system must become more practical, innovation-driven, and industry-aligned.
She also advocated fostering a patent culture and promoting interdisciplinary learning to solve complex problems creatively.
“True innovation,” the President noted, “is not just about intelligence— it must also reflect empathy, ethics, and excellence. Innovation driven by compassion is what makes the world better.”
During the ceremony, President Murmu awarded degrees to 1,880 students, including 37 gold medalists. She also released a special postage stamp to commemorate 100 years of the institute’s establishment.
The event was attended by Jharkhand Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, and several other dignitaries.
