President of India Droupadi Murmu wrote to the West Bengal government regarding the alleged attack on the RG Kar rape-murder victim’s mother by Kolkata police during a recent protest event to mark the first anniversary of the tragic death of a trainee doctor in the state-run healthcare facility.
According to sources, the president emailed the state’s chief secretary, Manoj Pant, seeking details of the action taken by the government following allegations that the victim’s mother was attacked on August 9. However, till Saturday, no official statement has been issued by the state government in response.
The victim’s father confirmed the development, saying, “The President has written to the Chief Secretary to know what steps have been taken after the attack on my wife. I have also received an email where the president assured us that her aide will remain in touch with our family. Now we have some hope. If they cooperate, it will be easier for us to get justice.”

It may be recalled that on August 9 last year, the body of a postgraduate medical student was recovered from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Exactly a year later, on August 9 this year, her parents began a campaign demanding justice. During that campaign on a road in central Kolkata, the victim’s mother was allegedly assaulted, with the family accusing the police of being involved.
In response, the President personally wrote to the family on August 13, assuring them of assistance. The president’s aide, undersecretary Gautam Kumar, has reportedly been tasked with keeping in touch with the family.
Meanwhile, in the original case, former civic volunteer of Kolkata Police Sanjay Roy has already been convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment. A case is currently pending in a higher court demanding capital punishment for him. Investigations into whether others were involved in the incident remain incomplete.
The victim’s parents, while continuing their street protests, have also written letters to President Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. They have met the CBI Director as well, pressing for a thorough probe and strict punishment for all those involved.
