PRTC, PUNBUS staff go on 2-hour strike over pending demands

The strike comes in the wake of growing discontent among transport workers, particularly workshop employees, over continued salary delays and stalled policy decisions.

Commuters across Punjab experienced disruptions on Tuesday as employees of Punjab Roadways, PUNBUS, and PRTC staged a statewide two-hour strike from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm, protesting delayed salaries and unfulfilled government promises.

The strike comes in the wake of growing discontent among transport workers, particularly workshop employees, over continued salary delays and stalled policy decisions. The protest was sparked after assurances made during a May 15 meeting with senior state officials, including the Transport Minister, State Transport Secretary, Director of State Transport, and PRTC Managing Director, failed to materialise.

During the meeting, officials reportedly agreed to the employees' demands, stating that a new policy had already been drafted and sent to the Finance Department for approval. However, a follow-up meeting scheduled with the Finance Department to finalise these decisions was canceled, further aggravating the employees.

Another meeting held on May 19 with transport department officials did little to resolve the matter, as no concrete steps were taken, prompting workers to proceed with Tuesday’s strike.

In a related update, the nationwide transport workers’ strike, initially scheduled for May 20, has now been postponed to July 9. Despite the deferment, transport unions supported district-level demonstrations held in front of Deputy Commissioner offices across Punjab today.
