Punjab Advocate-General Gurminder Singh resigned from his post on Sunday, nearly 18 months after assuming office. Singh, widely known as Garry, had been appointed in October 2023 following the resignation of his predecessor, Vinod Ghai.
In his resignation letter addressed to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, Singh cited his intention to return to private practice as the primary reason for stepping down.
However, sources suggest that internal issues within the Advocate-General’s office, particularly concerning the extension of law officers, played a role in his decision. While some law officers received extensions, others did not, leading to dissatisfaction within the department.

Additionally, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government has been implementing changes in response to its poor electoral performance in Delhi, which may have further influenced Singh’s resignation.
At 56, Gurminder Singh is a seasoned legal professional. After completing his LLB from Panjab University in 1989, he was designated as a Senior Advocate in 2014.
Over the years, he has built a strong reputation in constitutional, commercial, arbitration, and criminal law, practicing before various high courts, including those in Chandigarh, Delhi, and Shimla.
