The opening day of the two-day special session of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha concluded in just 11 minutes on Thursday as the House paid tributes to Abohar businessman Sanjay Verma, who was recently shot dead in a shocking incident earlier in the week.
During the session, Balluana MLA Amandeep Singh Musafir presented a proposal to include Verma’s name in the Obituary References. It is relevant to mention that Verma was shot dead by assailants from the Lawrence Bishnoi gang.
The Congress, led by Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa, also backed the proposal, stating that the brutal killing had deeply shaken the Malwa region.
While Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan appreciated the Punjab Police for taking quick action against those responsible, Bajwa raised concerns, pointing out that there was still no clarity regarding the exact action taken by the police.
Aam Aadmi Party leader Aman Arora urged the House to also include the 260 people who died in the tragic Ahmedabad air crash in June in the Obituary References.
The Assembly also paid homage to several other notable figures, including Dr. Kashmir Singh Sohal (MLA from Tarn Taran), former Union Minister Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, respected literary figure Rattan Singh Jaggi, and three brave soldiers—Naik Surinder Singh and Lance Naiks Baljit Singh and Gurpreet Singh—who died in the line of duty.
Noticeably, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and several of his Cabinet members were absent from the session. Shiromani Akali Dal MLA Ganieve Kaur Majithia also missed the session. The session saw the presence of just 11 Congress MLAs.
