The Punjab government has announced an increase in the promotion quota for school principals, raising it from 50 per cent to 75 per cent. This move will allow 500 teachers to be promoted to the position of principals in government schools, as confirmed by Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains on Tuesday.
In a statement, Bains emphasised that the decision reflects the state government's strong commitment to the welfare of teachers and to improving the quality of education in Punjab.
He noted that the previous Congress government had reduced the promotion quota from 75 per cent to 50 per cent in 2018, which led to a shortage of principals in state-run schools across the state. However, the AAP government has now restored the original quota.
Bains explained that the increased quota would provide more opportunities for experienced and qualified teachers to take on leadership roles, ultimately contributing to a stronger and more effective educational environment in schools.
This decision is expected to end the stagnation in teachers' promotions and create a more dynamic and motivating atmosphere for academic development.
The minister also mentioned that the government is focused on offering quality and modern education to students. As part of this effort, government school heads and teachers will be sent to top international and national training institutes to learn world-class teaching methods, further enhancing the overall educational experience.
