Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains said on Sunday that all private schools and colleges in the state would reopen from September 7, while government schools and colleges would resume classes from September 9 after building inspections are completed.

In a post on X, Bains wrote, “Important Information and Instructions Regarding the Reopening of Educational Institutions in Punjab State: Government, private, and aided schools, colleges, and universities in the state will reopen as usual from tomorrow.”

He further said in case any school or college had been affected by floods, the decision to keep it closed would be taken by the Deputy Commissioner of that district.

Bains also directed private schools to make sure that their buildings and classrooms are completely safe before reopening, to ensure the safety of students and teachers.

The minister added that on September 8, all government schools will remain closed for students. Teachers, however, will have to attend schools for cleaning activities with the help of S.M.C., panchayats, municipal councils, and corporations. “Teachers will thoroughly inspect school buildings. If any kind of issue or defect is found, it must be immediately reported to the district's Deputy Commissioner and the Engineering Department. From September 9, all government schools will reopen as usual,” he said in his post.

Meanwhile, Inspector General of Border Security Force (BSF) Punjab Frontier, Atul Fulzele, visited flood-hit border villages and posts along the Ferozepur border on Sunday to review the situation and check ongoing relief efforts.

He toured several flood-hit villages, including Pritam Singh Wala, Pachharian, Palla Megha, Jakhrawan, Basti Ramlal, Kamlewala Dulchike, and Kilche. He met local villagers, assessed the damage, and assured them of BSF’s continued support.

The IG also visited medical camps set up by the BSF and encouraged villagers to make use of the free medical and veterinary services being provided daily in flood-affected areas along the Punjab border. He praised the BSF troops for their hard work in rescue and relief operations despite the difficult conditions.  His visit also boosted the morale of personnel working on the frontlines.

In Fazilka district, the Indian Army carried out a relief operation on Saturday. Soldiers distributed relief materials, rescued people, and set up medical camps to treat patients affected by the floods. Relief efforts in the region are continuing.
