Punjab Police arrested two men on Thursday for their involvement in an illegal arms smuggling module and recovered weapons and ammunition from them.
The accused have been identified as Kanwalpreet Singh, also known as Kanwar, from Buttar Kalan village in Batala, and Ranjit Singh from Bhaini Bangar in Gurdaspur. Authorities recovered a 9 mm Glock pistol, a .30 bore pistol, two .32 bore pistols, four magazines, and 39 cartridges.
According to Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav, preliminary investigations revealed that Kanwalpreet was in contact with US-based gangster Pavittar Singh Chaurra, originally from Chaurra village in Batala, and was working under his instructions.
Chaurra is believed to have arranged the weapon consignment to supply criminal groups and disrupt peace in the border state. Investigators are now working to uncover the entire network and identify others involved.
Assistant Inspector General of Counter Intelligence, Pathankot, Sukhminder Singh Mann, shared that based on reliable intelligence, police launched an operation and arrested the suspects in Batala police district.
Both accused have a history of criminal activities. Kanwalpreet had previously been arrested in three cases, including attempted murder and criminal trespassing. After being released from Gurdaspur jail on December 10, 2024, he resumed criminal activities and was booked for firing at a man’s house with intent to kill.
Ranjit was also involved in an Arms Act case registered at Ghaniye Ke Bangar police station in Batala. Investigations are ongoing to trace their connections and past crimes.
