Punjab Police has formed a four-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate illegal migration and human trafficking, according to Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav on Friday.
The SIT will take action against anyone found involved in illegal migration or human trafficking, Yadav said in a post on X.
This move follows the deportation of 104 Indians, including 30 from Punjab, from the US. Many of those deported claim they were tricked by travel agents who took them through the 'donkey route'—an illegal and dangerous path used by migrants to enter the US.
The SIT is led by Parveen Sinha, IPS, ADGP NRI, and includes Shive Verma, IPS, ADGP/Internal Security, Dr. S Boopathi, IPS, IGP/Provisioning, and Satinder Singh, IPS, DIG Border Range. They are tasked with looking into the issue of illegal human trafficking and migration related to the deportation of Punjab residents from the US.
The SIT has been instructed to take appropriate legal action against anyone involved in illegal activities. The team can also include other officers in the investigation and will work with local police authorities to ensure full support and resources.
