A fresh western disturbance is expected to impact the western Himalayan region from May 2, bringing rain to several parts of Punjab and Haryana till May 7. It is also likely to cause a noticeable drop in daytime temperatures across both states.
As per a bulletin issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday, light rain is expected at isolated places in Punjab and Haryana on May 2, 3, 6 and 7. Rain activity may increase on May 4 and 5, when a few areas are likely to receive showers.
Day temperatures are likely to rise by around two degrees Celsius over the next 48 hours in both states. Thereafter, temperatures are expected to fall by about 3–4 degrees Celsius. Thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds are also forecast during this period.
During the past 24 hours, Rohtak recorded Haryana’s highest maximum temperature at 40.8°C, while Bathinda in Punjab recorded 39.5°C. Despite the heat, temperatures remained below normal at several places, falling short by up to 4.8°C in Haryana and 4.9°C in Punjab.
Light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds was reported at a few locations in both states. Isolated areas in Haryana also experienced hailstorms, the IMD said.
Seasonal rainfall during March and April has remained above the long period average in both states. Overall rainfall during this period has been surplus by 29 per cent in Haryana and 19 per cent in Punjab. However, some districts recorded deficient rainfall. In Haryana, these include Ambala, Faridabad, Fatehabad, Hisar, Jind, Kaithal, Sonipat and Yamunanagar. In Punjab, districts such as Fatehgarh Sahib, Hoshiarpur, Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Ludhiana, Mansa, Muktsar and Patiala reported below-normal rain.
The IMD said a western disturbance currently persists over Kashmir and adjoining areas in the middle tropospheric levels. Another western disturbance is active over Iran in the middle tropospheric westerlies, while an upper air cyclonic circulation is present over north Punjab and nearby regions at lower tropospheric levels.
Under the influence of these weather systems, scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall or snowfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds is expected over Jammu and Kashmir from May 2 to 5. Similar weather conditions are likely over Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand between May 3 and May 7.
Isolated hailstorm activity is also likely over Jammu and Kashmir on May 3, over Himachal Pradesh on May 3 and 4, and over Uttarakhand on May 3 and 4. Parts of the plains in North India are also expected to receive isolated to scattered light to moderate rainfall during this period, the IMD added.
