Heavy rains lashed several parts of Punjab and Chandigarh on Sunday. Images shows rescuing efforts of the forces across the state amid incessant rainfall.

Punjab’s Beas river swells following the incessant rains in the region. An alert has been issued by the Kapurthala district administration on Sunday, requesting the public in the Sultanpur Lodhi area to move to safer places. Kapurthala Deputy Commissioner (DC) Amit Kumar Panchal said due to heavy rains, the water level in the Beas river has increased to 2.35 lakh cusecs and urged people living in the low-lying areas to immediately move to safer places.

The meteorological department has forecast heavy showers at isolated places on Sunday and Monday, and light to moderate rains till Tuesday. In the 24-hour period ending 8:30 am on Sunday, Amritsar received 60.9 mm of rain, Ludhiana 30.4 mm, Bathinda 62 mm, Faridkot 48.8 mm, Gurdaspur 9.6 mm, Fazilka 16.5 mm, Ferozepur 46 mm, Mansa 17 mm, Mohali 2.5 mm, and Sri Anandpur Sahib 28 mm. Continuous rain was also witnessed in the state’s capital, Chandigarh, on Sunday.

Indian Army and the state disaster response force teams are continuously evacuating people. Among the most flood-affected areas are the villages in the Sultanpur Lodhi and Bholath areas. Punjab is facing floods with the Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi rivers overflowing due to heavy rain in their catchment areas in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. Villages worst-affected by the floods were in Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Fazilka, Kapurthala, Tarn Taran, Ferozepur, Hoshiarpur, and Amritsar districts.

Haryana is likely to witness light to moderate rain at many places from August 31 to September 2, while heavy rain is expected at isolated places till September 3.

Newborn, mother rescued by forces:
Army personnel have rescued a woman and her 15-day-old child, stranded for days on the first floor of a partially submerged building in the Dhangai village of Punjab's Gurdaspur district, and took them to safety through 18 kilometres of inundated terrain. Sappers of the Army's Kharga Corps were on Saturday informed about the newborn and the mother, who had undergone a cesarian procedure just a fortnight ago, marooned in the house for four days.

Swinging into action, the personnel rescued them using an improvised ladder and took the duo to safety, navigating for three kilometres through strong water current by boat and the next 15 kilometres of submerged route in an Army vehicle, all the while providing them milk and water, a statement said. The mother and child were reunited with their family.
