Scenes from landslide-hit highways, waterlogged streets and uprooted transformers paint a grim picture of Himachal Pradesh’s battered districts, with Mandi emerging as the epicentre of the devastation.

Relentless monsoon showers continued to wreak havoc across Himachal Pradesh on Thursday, severely impacting public utilities and transport infrastructure, as key services remained disrupted in several districts.

The State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC), in its latest update issued at 10 am on Thursday, reported that 261 roads remained blocked, 599 electricity distribution transformers (DTRs) were disrupted, and 797 water supply schemes had been affected across the hill state.

According to the Himachal Pradesh Disaster Management Authority, the situation has worsened compared to the previous evening, when 245 roads were reported closed, 918 DTRs were hit, and 683 water supply schemes had been affected.

Mandi district continues to be the most severely affected region, with 186 roads blocked and 580 water supply schemes disrupted. The Dharampur, Seraj, Thalout and Karsog subdivisions bore the brunt of the damage. Gohar subdivision alone accounted for 258 disrupted DTRs, while Sundernagar faced damage to 559 water schemes.

Kullu district reported 37 road blockages, predominantly in Nirmand and Banjar, along with 15 DTRs and 33 affected water supply schemes.

Hamirpur, though spared from road closures, witnessed 62 DTR disruptions and 144 damaged water schemes, with major hits in Barsar and Hamirpur subdivisions.

Twelve roads were closed in Kangra, though water services remained unaffected. Shimla reported minor disruptions, three roads, one transformer, and 12 water schemes affected, primarily in Kupvi and Rampur.

Sirmaur recorded nine blocked roads and 24 disrupted water supply schemes. Chamba reported nine road closures and six DTR failures, while Solan had seven roads blocked. Una registered three road closures but no damage to water or power systems.

Kinnaur witnessed minimal impact with one road and one DTR affected, while Lahaul & Spiti remained entirely unaffected by the monsoon-induced disruptions.

The SEOC said the situation was being closely monitored, and coordination among departments including the Public Works Department, Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board (HPSEB), and the Irrigation and Public Health (IPH) department was underway to expedite restoration work.

The state government has urged residents in vulnerable and flood-prone areas to remain cautious as rainfall is expected to persist. Alternate routes are being arranged where necessary, and utility teams have been deployed to restore services on priority.
