A youth was arrested for allegedly issuing rape threats and making obscene comments against a woman who had expressed support for the Indian Army’s Operation Sindoor on social media. The arrest was made by the Diamond Harbour Police in South 24 Parganas after an intensive investigation that led police to Odisha, where the accused was finally apprehended.
On May 9, a housewife from the Falta area had posted a patriotic message on Facebook following the Indian Army’s cross-border strikes under Operation Sindoor.
Her post read: "One more war has been added to the pages of history, the name of Sindoor. I am lucky to have found a country. A country that has never learned to lose. I am proud that I am an Indian."
Shortly after the post went public, she began receiving obscene comments and rape threats from a Facebook profile named ‘Raj F Lover’. Alarmed and distressed, the woman promptly filed a written complaint with the Superintendent of Police, Diamond Harbour Police District.
A special investigation team was formed under the leadership of Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mitun Kumar Dey, involving officers from the cyber crime branch and Falta police station. Initial findings revealed that the threats had come from a fake Facebook profile. Authorities then reached out to Facebook and successfully traced the individual behind the account.
“During the investigation, we found that the accused had fled the area. We later discovered he was hiding in Odisha. A team was sent to conduct a raid and the accused was arrested from Cuttack,” said Dey.
The youth, a resident of the Falta police station area, had been absconding since the incident. He was brought to West Bengal on a transit remand and produced before the Diamond Harbour Magistrate’s Court, where the judge granted the police five days’ custody for further interrogation.
Police have already seized the accused's mobile phone for forensic analysis as part of the ongoing investigation. The arrested individual is currently in police custody and is being interrogated further.
The incident follows the Indian Army’s high-impact retaliatory strikes under Operation Sindoor, conducted in response to a deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam,. The operation saw the Indian Army destroy several terror camps in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and across the border. Following the military action, a brief period of hostilities ensued, which ultimately ended in a ceasefire.
The woman’s social media post was a reflection of her pride in the country’s military response—something that, according to the complaint, provoked the accused into issuing threats.
The swift action by the Diamond Harbour Police has been met with appreciation. The complainant expressed satisfaction with the way law enforcement handled the case, especially in tracking the accused across state lines and securing a prompt arrest.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to ensuring the safety of citizens expressing their opinions online and warned of strict action against those who use digital platforms to intimidate or harass others.
