Students’ Federation of India (SFI) members gather around West Bengal Education Minister Bratya Basu’s car at Jadavpur University campus, in Kolkata.

Researcher and former Jadavpur University student Hindol Majumdar has been arrested in connection with the alleged attack on Education Minister Bratya Basu’s car on the university campus earlier this year. He was detained by immigration officials at Delhi airport on Thursday based on a lookout notice issued against him.

Police sources said Majumdar, who had been pursuing research in Spain, was returning to Kolkata via Delhi when he was intercepted. He was handed over to Delhi Police, who informed their counterparts in Kolkata.

A team from Jadavpur Police Station, led by the investigating officer in the case, has reached Delhi to complete the arrest process. Majumdar will be produced in a court in Delhi, where a transit remand will be sought.

According to the police, Hindol is one of the main accused in the March 1 incident, when protests and vandalism broke out around the Education Minister’s car during his visit to Jadavpur University to attend the annual conference of the Trinamool-affiliated professors’ organisation ‘Webcupa’.

While Bratya Basu was leaving after the event, police allege, members of left-leaning student groups led a demonstration that turned into a scuffle, damaging the minister’s vehicle. “It was Majumdar who had plotted the attack sitting in Spain. He communicated with the attackers via WhatsApp chat and call. We came to know about his involvement after arresting a student of the university,” said an officer of Jadavpur police station.

Students, however, offered a different account, claiming that the minister’s car first hit a student, sparking tension that escalated into a clash. Hindol’s name appeared in the FIR lodged after the incident, prompting the issue of a lookout notice.
