Golden Globe-winning actor and longtime supporter of the Tibetan cause, Richard Gere, arrived in McLeodganj on Tuesday to take part in the week-long celebrations marking the 90th birthday of the Dalai Lama. He was accompanied by his son, Homer James Jigme Gere.
Gere, who also serves as Chairman of the International Campaign for Tibet, joined spiritual leaders, dignitaries, and well-wishers from around the world in offering long life prayers to the Tibetan spiritual leader.

The father-son duo attended a special religious ceremony at the Nechung Drayangling Monastery in Gangchen Kyishong. Speaking to the media, Gere shared, “I’m here to celebrate His Holiness’s 90th birthday and to wish him continued good health, strength, and compassion.”
Reflecting on his deep connection with Nechung, Gere added, “Nechung is one of my oldest friends. This monastery holds a special place in my heart — not just for me, but also for my son. He’s even visited my home in the U.S. It’s always a joy to be here.”
One of the highlights of the day was a sacred ritual where the Nechung Oracle — regarded as a protector deity of the Tibetan people — entered a trance to bless officials of the Central Tibetan Administration. The powerful spiritual moment was witnessed by a large gathering of monks and devotees, adding depth and meaning to the already heartfelt celebration.
