Responding sharply to Mizoram MP K Vanlalvena’s proposal for "separate administrative units" to resolve the ethnic unrest in Manipur, Rajya Sabha member from Manipur, Leishemba Sanajaoba, cautioned him against overstepping boundaries.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Sanajaoba stated, "My friend, Don't cross the line... Please confine in your state issues... Stop interferences in Manipur's issues... Be a good neighbour." His remarks came after Vanlalvena, representing the BJP ally Mizo National Front (MNF), suggested the removal of Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh and the imposition of President's Rule in the state as a precursor to restoring peace.
Vanlalvena’s comments stemmed from the ongoing ethnic violence that has plagued Manipur since May 2023, resulting in over 250 deaths.
The Mizoram MP in a recent interview had advocated a two-step approach, beginning with President's Rule.
He suggested that during this period, the Centre should evaluate the situation and delineate lands occupied by Meiteis and tribal communities.
Vanlalvena argued that separate administration was necessary due to the deepening ethnic divide. "The hill tribes can't go to the valley. Similarly, the Meiteis no longer dare to go to the hill areas.
New administrative units should be created in lands occupied by both the Meiteis and the ethnic Kuki-Zo people to bring a lasting solution and end the conflict," he remarked.
The Kuki-Zo people, who share ethnic ties with the Mizos of Mizoram, have been central to the current unrest.
Vanlalvena’s proposal, however, has been met with stiff resistance from Manipur leaders like Sanajaoba, who view such suggestions as unwarranted interference.
The ethnic violence in Manipur has drawn attention to the fractured relations between its hill and valley communities, with many calling for a balanced and inclusive resolution.
