Rs 1,000 cr loss, livelihoods destroyed in Seraj: Thakur

Leader of the Opposition Jai Ram Thakur.

Leader of the Opposition Jai Ram Thakur on Friday said the people of Seraj Assembly constituency in Mandi district had suffered losses amounting to nearly ₹1,000 crore due to the recent rain-related disasters, and he would seek financial help from the Centre to support to overcome these. “All possible means of livelihood have been destroyed,” he said.

Thakur visited the worst-affected areas—Thunag, Dhar, Jarol, and Janjehli—to assess the damage caused by cloudbursts and flashfloods and to review ongoing relief and rehabilitation efforts. During his visit, he also went to his ancestral home, which has developed cracks, and an apple orchard that was swept away in the floods.

Calling the destruction “unprecedented,” Thakur said, “It’s heartbreaking to see the scale of loss. The 56-km Chail Chowk–Janjehli road took nine days to reopen, but considering the urgency, restoration should have happened much faster to ease the suffering of the people.”

“People must be provided pre-fabricated houses before the onset of the winter, as the construction of permanent houses can take much longer,” he added.

He further said, “I, along with Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, visited many villages in the past two days to assess damage caused by the rain diaster.

While I have sought the help of the state government in rehabilitation work, I will visit New Delhi to seek special financial assistance from the Centre.”

He expressed deep concern over the destruction of homes, apple orchards, and agricultural land. “The tragedy is that all possible means of livelihood have been destroyed. A new beginning will have to be made from a scratch,” he added.

Thakur also extended gratitude to NGOs, social organisations, and personnel from the NDRF, SDRF, Army, Air Force, ITBP, state police, and Home Guards for their dedicated rescue and relief efforts.
