A former constable in Madhya Pradesh has been found with assets worth Rs 7.98 crore, including Rs 2.87 crore in cash and 234 kg of silver, according to a top official from the Lokayukta Police.
The assets were seized after searches were carried out at Saurabh Sharma's residence and office on December 18 and 19. Sharma had served as a constable in the state transport department and retired in 2023.
His father, a government doctor, passed away in 2015, after which Sharma was appointed as a constable on compassionate grounds.
Sharma allegedly used corrupt practices to amass these assets, including setting up a school and a hotel in the names of his family members and close associates, Chetan Singh Gaud and Sharad Jaiswal.
During the raids at his residence in Arera Colony, authorities found Rs 1.15 crore in cash (including foreign currency), Rs 50 lakh worth of jewellery, and other assets such as vehicles worth Rs 2.21 crore. At his office, the police recovered Rs 1.72 crore in cash, 234 kg of silver valued at Rs 2.10 crore, and additional assets worth Rs 3 crore.
In total, movable assets worth Rs 7.98 crore have been recovered from locations connected to Sharma. Summons have been issued to Sharma, his wife, mother, and his associates Gaud and Jaiswal for questioning. The Income Tax department has also seized cash and gold from Gaud, and they are currently investigating bank details and land documents found during the searches.
In a separate operation on December 19, the I-T department seized more than Rs 10 crore in cash and over 50 kg of gold from a car owned by Gaud near Bhopal.
