The Mumbai Police confirmed on Friday that the facial recognition test of the Bangladeshi national arrested in connection with the Saif Ali Khan stabbing case has yielded positive results.
The police announced on Friday that the test had established that the individual captured on CCTV footage was indeed Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad.
The incident occurred earlier this month when the prominent Bollywood actor was attacked by an intruder identified as Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad, who allegedly entered Khan’s residence with the intention of committing theft.
Following a violent confrontation, the actor sustained stab wounds to his thoracic spine and other body parts. He was rushed to Lilavati Hospital for immediate medical attention.
“The arrested accused Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad’s facial recognition tested positive. As per the test, the person in the CCTV footage and Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad are confirmed to be the same person,” stated the Mumbai Police.

Investigators revealed that the accused had entered India from Bangladesh and had stayed at various locations in Kolkata for several days prior to the attack.
Dispelling rumours about fingerprint discrepancies, Paramjit Singh Dahiya, Additional Commissioner of Police, stated, “Whenever an accused is arrested, multiple pieces of evidence are collected. We have found substantial oral, physical, and technical evidence against the accused… We have caught the right person.”
The police reported that the accused gained access to Saif Ali Khan’s Bandra residence intending to commit theft. He was intercepted and detained at Hiranandani Estate in Thane while allegedly planning to flee to his native village in Bangladesh.
However, the accused’s defence counsel, Sandeep Shekhane, disputed the police’s claims, alleging that “no proper investigation” had been conducted.
“A police custody for five days has been granted. The court has asked the police to submit a report within five days. The police have no proof that he is a Bangladeshi. They said that he came here six months ago; that is a wrong statement. He has been living here for more than seven years. His family is in Mumbai… This is a clear-cut violation of Section 43A. No proper investigation has been done,” Shekhane asserted during a press briefing.
Saif Ali Khan, who underwent surgery at Lilavati Hospital, was discharged on 21 January. Upon returning to his Bandra residence, the actor briefly waved to the media.
