President Draupadi Murmu honoured Jharkhand's Salima Tete, a talented hockey player, with the prestigious Arjuna Award 2024 for her remarkable contributions to hockey.
Salima, who hails from Barki Chhapar village in Simdega district, is currently the Captain of the Indian Women's Hockey Team. She was among 32 players recognized at a special ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan in Delhi.
Her achievement has brought immense pride to Jharkhand. Chief Minister Hemant Soren, former Chief Minister Arjun Munda, and other prominent leaders congratulated her on this milestone.
Salima's journey is inspiring. Born into a poor tribal family, she started playing hockey with a bamboo stick. Despite many challenges, she rose to become the Captain of the national team.
She is the first female hockey player from Jharkhand to receive the Arjuna Award. Previously, Olympian Michael Kindo was the only hockey player from the state to earn this honor. In the last decade, other players like Silbanus Dungdung and Michael Kindo have also received the Major Dhyan Chand Award.
Salima's recognition adds to Jharkhand's rich hockey legacy.
