Sanjeev Arora, the Aam Aadmi Party’s newly elected MLA from Ludhiana West, will take oath on Saturday at 11 am at Raj Bhavan in Chandigarh. The swearing-in ceremony will be administered by the Speaker in the presence of senior AAP leaders and supporters.
Arora’s victory is seen as a significant moment for AAP, as he secured a strong win in the June 19 bypoll, held after the untimely demise of sitting MLA Gurpreet Bassi Gogi. He defeated Congress’ Bharat Bhushan Ashu by a margin of 10,637 votes, receiving 35,179 votes, while Ashu and BJP’s Jiwan Gupta trailed with 24,542 and 20,323 votes, respectively.
Currently serving as a Rajya Sabha MP since April 2022, the industrialist-turned-politician will now vacate his seat in the Upper House upon formally assuming his new role in the Assembly.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has already hinted at inducting Arora into the state cabinet. This move is seen as a step toward fulfilling a key electoral promise made by AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal during the election campaign.
