Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly Suvendu Adhikari on Monday launched a sharp attack on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee while addressing a ‘Vijay Sankalp Sabha’ in Haldia, asserting that he would defeat her in Bhabanipur in the upcoming West Bengal Assembly Election 2026.

Speaking ahead of filing his nomination papers, Adhikari called for the defeat of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and issued a strong political challenge. “In the last election, the BJP won two seats in the Haldia subdivision while the TMC won one. This time, we will win all three seats,” he said, adding that the party aimed to secure a lead in every booth.

Adhikari also raised concerns over governance and identity, stating, “West Bengal cannot be allowed to become Bangladesh. We will not let it fall into the hands of Jamaat sympathisers. The people have awakened. Bengal must be saved.” He further predicted that a BJP government would be formed in the state by May 4 and reiterated his claim that Mamata would face defeat in Bhabanipur, as she did in Nandigram in the previous election.

Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, who also addressed the rally, echoed similar sentiments. He alleged that the Chief Minister lacked substantive issues to campaign on and was resorting to politicising food-related matters. Referring to Mamata’s claim that the BJP would ban the consumption of fish and eggs if voted to power, Pradhan dismissed the allegation, stating that he himself consumes both.

Pradhan further accused the TMC government of failing to deliver on key issues, including employment and women’s safety. “We demand jobs in Bengal; we demand safety for women,” he said, while also alleging that the state government was promoting divisive politics.

Continuing his attack, Adhikari accused the ruling party of encouraging infiltration and criticised what he described as dynastic politics, targeting Chief Minister’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee. “Jobs should be for all people of the state, not limited to a few,” he said.

The rally marks an intensification of political campaigning in the state, with leaders from both sides sharpening their rhetoric ahead of the high-stakes Assembly elections.
