Schools in Punjab’s border districts of Amritsar and Tarn Taran will reopen on Wednesday, while those in Fazilka and Ferozepur will remain shut as a precautionary measure, officials confirmed on Tuesday.

Educational institutions across five border districts—Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Fazilka, Ferozepur, and Pathankot—remained closed on Tuesday amid heightened security concerns following recent cross-border tensions.

The district authorities in Amritsar and Tarn Taran announced that schools will resume classes on Wednesday with revised timings from 10:30 am to 2:30 pm.

Meanwhile, the Amritsar's district administration has urged residents to observe a voluntary blackout on Tuesday evening.

"We will switch off the street lights at 8 pm today. Please follow a voluntary blackout by switching off all your external lights at this time- eg verandah, garden lights, lights at the gate/door, etc," said a message shared by the Amritsar deputy commissioner.

"Once indoor, please use minimal light or ensure light does not escape outside the house. However, in case there is a red alert, then please switch off these internal lights as well and stay away from windows.

"We do not want to centrally shut power. However, in case there is a red alert and we find there is no compliance, we will be forced to centrally shut power," said the Amritsar DC.

The Amritsar district administration on Tuesday morning said people can resume their normal activities.

Punjab shares a 553-kilometre-long border with Pakistan, and recent tensions have kept border districts on high alert. However, a degree of normalcy has returned, with markets bustling and daily activities resuming in many areas.

India and Pakistan reached an agreement on Saturday to immediately cease cross-border military action following four days of escalated drone and missile exchanges.
