The Education Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Sakeena Itoo, announced on Monday that the government has decided to reopen schools in Kashmir from  July 8, rebuking the earlier speculations that there might be an extension in the holiday amid prevailing heat wave conditions.

The schools in Jammu and Kashmir are opening after a 15-day summer break called in early 23 June by the minister amid an unprecedented surge in heatwave conditions in the region.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, she said, “We have decided to reopen the schools on Tuesday.” However, she hinted that the schools will be opening with a new schedule announced by the government before announcing the summer break last month.

The schools falling under the Srinagar municipal limits shall function from 7:30 AM to 11:30 AM. While schools falling outside the municipal limits shall function from 8 AM to 12 PM. Besides, schools must conduct online classes to complete the pending syllabus on time.

It is pertinent to mention that Jammu and Kashmir is reeling under an intense ongoing heatwave, with dry and hot air making conditions even worse for the people.

According to the Meteorological Department, the temperature in the first week of July is the third-highest ever recorded in Srinagar since records began in 1892.

The second-highest was 37.7°C on 5 July 1953, while the all-time high stands at 38.3°C, recorded on 10 July 1946.

Earlier, Mukhtar Ahmad, Met Director Srinagar, said, “Srinagar just witnessed its hottest June since 1978, and second hottest since 1892.” There is no respite from the heatwave in Kashmir, though there are forecasts of rainfall in the coming days, particularly in Kashmir.
