The Indian Army has stepped up its counter-insurgency operations in the Lasana area of Surankote in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district after troops made contact with terrorists on Monday night.

According to a post by the Indian Army’s White Knight Corps on social media platform X, the operation is being conducted in coordination with the Jammu and Kashmir Police to prevent the escape of militants.

“Op Lasana. Contact was established with #terrorists during a joint operation with J&K Police at Lasana, Surankote, last night. Additional troops have been inducted, and search operations are ongoing to prevent the terrorists from escaping,” the White Knight Corps stated in its post.

The Romeo Force, a counter-insurgency unit of the Army, also joined the search efforts after terrorists reportedly opened fire on security forces during the encounter. One personnel sustained injuries in the exchange of gunfire near Lasana village, situated along the National Highway that connects Poonch to Jammu, officials said.

Visuals from the area on Tuesday morning showed Army personnel conducting stringent vehicle inspections, assisted by a dog squad. The village has been cordoned off, and additional troops have been deployed to ensure no escape routes remain accessible to the terrorists.

Lasana remains under heightened security as combined teams of the Army and the J&K Police continue the operation.

The incident comes amid a renewed surge in anti-terror activities in the Union Territory. Over the weekend, the Army reiterated its resolve to continue operations “until terrorists are eliminated.”

Director General of the Kishtwar-Doda-Ramban range, Shridhar Patil, reaffirmed public cooperation and inter-agency coordination.

“Until terrorists are eliminated, the operations will go on. The people of the area have given full support to security forces. These operations show good coordination of security forces,” Patil said during a press briefing.

In a separate operation on Sunday, security forces recovered a significant cache of arms and supplies in Kishtwar district following the neutralisation of three terrorists. The seized items include one M4 rifle, two AK-47s, 11 magazines, 65 M4 bullets, and 56 AK-47 rounds.

Officials also recovered a cap, first aid materials, and medicines from the site. Authorities have reportedly contacted the Pakistani side regarding the recovered medical supplies, an official statement said.

As the search operations in Poonch continue, the region remains on edge, with authorities determined to thwart any further terrorist attempts and restore normalcy.
