Seven injured as bus turns turtle near J&K's Katra

Seven people were injured in a road mishap near Katra, Jammu and Kashmir. A bus overturned at Myari Bridge while en route to Jammu, with officials citing reckless driving as a possible cause.

Rescue efforts are underway after seven people were injured in the accident.


At least seven people sustained injuries when a bus overturned near Myari Bridge in Katra district, Jammu and Kashmir, on Saturday.

 

The bus, bearing registration number JK-02BB-2577, was travelling from Katra towards Jammu when it turned turtle, resulting in the mishap.

 

All the injured were promptly shifted to CHC Katra for treatment, according to officials.

 

The injured were identified as Darshana Devi (45), wife of Bansi Lal; Kanta Devi (62), wife of Krishan Chand; Sudesh Kumari (62), wife of Gyan Chand; Manisha Devi (27), daughter of Balbir Singh; Radhika (23), daughter of Bishan Dass; Jugal, son of Bansi Lal; and Rani Devi (42), wife of the late Puran Chand.

 

All are residents of Serli Katra, except Radhika from Kadmal Katra and Manisha from Maghal Katra.

 

Police have registered a case, and an investigation has been initiated.

 

As per official statistics, Jammu and Kashmir reported 4,990 road accidents up to October 2024, resulting in 703 fatalities and 6,820 injuries.

 

Jammu district recorded the highest toll with 910 accidents, 105 deaths, and 1,218 injuries, followed by Srinagar, Anantnag, and Baramulla.

 

In Kashmir, Budgam, Pulwama, and Ganderbal districts saw a significant number of accidents, while in Jammu, districts like Kathua and Doda reported high casualties, attributed to treacherous and risky road conditions.

 

Experts cite reckless driving and inadequate road infrastructure as major contributors to the growing number of accidents in the region.
