After an unexpected moderate snowfall in the urban areas and moderate to heavy snowfall in the rural areas, Kashmir Valley is witnessing extremely cold weather conditions.
The ongoing “Chillai Kalan” has added the chill. The period lasts for 40 days, starting on December 21 and ending on January 31.
According to the Meteorological Centre in Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir recorded a minimum of minus 3.5 degrees Celsius on Tuesday.
Several tourist destinations have also recorded sub-zero freezing temperatures, such as Pahalgam, which serves as the base camp for the annual Shri Amarnath Yatra and recorded a minimum temperature of minus 8.4 degrees Celsius.
Similarly, another famous tourist destination, Gulmarg, remained the coldest place, with temperatures dropping to a minimum of minus 11.5 degrees Celsius.
The meteorological department predicts a severe cold spell will grip the region over the next 4–8 days.
According to the meteorological department, December 31 is expected to be cold and dry. Starting January 1, two consecutive Western disturbances will bring changes to J&K and surrounding areas.
Light snow across scattered areas is predicted from the evening of January 1 to the morning of Jnauary 2. Between January 3-6, there is a possibility of light to moderate snow at many places.
Subsequently, the number of incoming tourists to the Kashmir Valley has also dipped due to intense cold-wave weather conditions that are supposed to intensify in the coming days.
